Things To Do on Bainbridge Island This Week – December 16-22

Christmas is rapidly approaching with lots of great holiday-themed activities as proof! For our latest weekly list of Things To Do on Bainbridge Island we’ve highlighted holiday favorites, like a performance of the Nutcracker and playtime with Santa, as well as live music and the Island’s weekly trivia night. Monday is Trivia Night at the brewery, presented by Trivia Time Live’s DJ. From 7 to 9 pm, teams compete for prizes and the pennant during four rounds of interesting questions. Come and play by yourself or join a team. Relax, have a few beers and snacks, and join in the weekly fun! Admission: Free

Waterfront Book Group Discusses Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne

Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager (roughly $2.16 million today) set by his friends at the Reform Club. The week begins with a family-friendly activity- making gingerbread houses, and continues with rousing live music and an informative lecture about the mating rituals of crabs from a Smithsonian-affiliated expert. City of Bainbridge Island Lodging Tax Advisory Committee Meeting

The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) reviews and comments on proposals for expenditures from the city’s Lodging Tax Fund, also known as the Civic Improvement Fund. The Civic Improvement Fund, created through a state tax on overnight stays in lodging establishments (ie., hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts) provides funding for projects that will promote tourism and for the acquisition or operation of tourism-related facilities. These funds are critical to the operation of the Bainbridge Island Lodging Association (BILA) and other entities that promote overnight guests on Bainbridge Island. Admission: Free

All ages enjoy the wonder of the Holiday Village at Bloedel Reserve. Intricately designed hand-made buildings and whimsical trains create holiday memories for years to come. With the Visitor’s Center decked to the nines, and cider simmering, it becomes an experience for the senses. The Holiday Village runs through January 5th and is closed Mondays. Admission: $13 for adults; $9 for seniors/military; $5 for children (12 and under are free)

This is no ordinary art show! An eclectic selection of artwork and music done by artists from around the Puget Sound is on offer. The artists range in ages 6- 81 years of age, and represents diverse mediums, with themes both surreal and traditional. ‘Off the Wall’ will feature local musicians playing live music and a silent auction, a raffle of original art works, and a live collaborative art piece that will be auctioned off at the end of the show. Admission: Free

If you’re a male fiddler crab, one of your biggest concerns is how to grab and keep the attention of all those lady crabs. Males will use competition, deception and exaggeration as techniques in their advertisement and salesmanship attempts. IslandWood welcomes Dr. John Christy from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute who has spent over thirty years studying the science of sexual selection involving these charismatic crabs. Those interested in zoology and animal behavior will delight in this complex story of boy meets girl in the crab world. Don’t miss this unique program!
