Don’t Miss the Winter Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market

Bainbridge-Island-Farmers-Market

The Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market continues through December 20 this year.

The Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market is a much-loved tradition on the Island. For residents and visitors, what better way to experience our special community than a trip to Town Square on a sunny Saturday morning with the sound of live music playing? The Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market is home to nearly 50 farmers, crafters and local nonprofits, who sell their wares, produce and programming from April to November every year.

But did you know that the Market doesn’t close up shop during the winter?

That’s right, the Winter Bainbridge Island Farmers’ Market continues through late December, offering outstanding locally-made gifts for the holidays… and from the comfort of an indoor location. On Saturdays from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm between November 22 and December 20, the market moves inside Eagle Harbor Church at the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue. Veggies, meats, cheese, art, craft items, hot food, and live music make a fun time for all!

So, see you at the Winter Market!

The Bainbridge Island Turkey Trot benefits local families in need.

Runners and walkers of all ages:

Start your Thanksgiving Day right with a fun, active community event that supports local families in need. Over the past four years, the Bainbridge Island Turkey Trot has raised nearly $65,000 for Bainbridge Island’s local food bank in the first four years of the event. Taking place in beautiful Battle Point Park, runners and walkers are welcome in both the five-kilometer and 1-mile races.

bainbridge-island-turkey-trot-2The event benefits Helpline House, a community-funded non-profit agency that provides a full range of social services to residents of Bainbridge Island, including a food bank, clothing bank, medical equipment for loan, social work advocacy and consultation and referrals to counseling. The food bank itself serves over 350 households each week. Helpline House is proud to support local families in need and to help them enjoy the holiday season.

bainbridge-island-turkey-trot-2Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category for both races. Light refreshments will be provided at the finish for race participants. Day-of-race registration for the Bainbridge Island Turkey Trot is available in the Transmitter Building, 11299 Arrow Point Drive NE, starting at 7:30 am day of race. Thanksgiving Week Wine Tasting at Bainbridge Vineyards

bainbridge-vineyards-bottles

Bainbridge Vineyards invites you to stop by this week during their special Thanksgiving holiday hours. All week-long, the Day Road vineyard and tasting room (8989 Day Road East, 206-842-9463) will be open from 12-5 pm. Any purchase of three bottles will receive a 15% discount. As part of the BILA-Bainbridge Vineyards partnership, guests of BILA member lodgers also receive a special 2-for-1 on wine tasting!

bainbridge-vineyards-1Bainbridge Vineyards is one of seven small, independent wineries that dot the island. Its roots date to 1977, when Gerard and JoAnne Bentryn founded a single-acre vineyard in downtown Winslow after studying viticulture around the world. In 1982 they released their first estate-grown vintage and shortly after purchased seven-acres from Akio Suyematsu, whose family farm had operated in the area since 1928. Excepting the period of Japanese-American forced internment during WWII, the Day Road farm is the oldest, continuously farmed property in Kitsap County.

bainbridge-vineyards-logo-201x141Last year, Bainbridge Vineyards was re-opened by Betsey Wittick and a new cooperative ownership. Wittick, who holds a Masters in Horticulture from Cornell University, began growing grapes and making wine with the Bentryns in 1989. Today, Wittick remains committed to seeing local food production remain a viable livelihood and important asset to the community. The certified-organic Bainbridge Vineyards produces only about 1,200 cases per year with wine made exclusively from Bainbridge Island-grown grapes and fruit.

bainbridge-vineyards-pinot-grisIn 2010, Sunset Magazine named Bainbridge Island “the Northwest’s new wine destination.” In recent years, growing numbers of visitors from Seattle and further afield tour and taste Bainbridge Island’s boutique wineries. Whether you’re a visitor or an Island resident, stop by Bainbridge Vineyards this week to see (and taste) for yourself!

Bainbridge Vineyards’s wine is also available at Town & Country Market, Bay Hay & Feed and Walt’s Lynwood Center Market on Bainbridge Island, as well as finer markets in Poulsbo, Kingston and Port Townsend. Bainbridge Vineyards is a member of the Winery Alliance of Bainbridge Island.

Bainbridge Island to Study Historic Suyematsu Farm

historic-suyematsu-farm-bainbridge-island

Archive photo of the historic Suyematsu Farm on Bainbridge Island.

The City of Bainbridge Island has issued a request for qualifications seeking a historian or architectural historian to complete a historic structures report/management plan and local historic register nomination form for the Suyematsu Farm located on Day Road. The purpose of the study is to assess the buildings on the Suyematsu Farm to provide a better understanding of their significance and historical uses, while helping to prioritize the buildings for any possible future rehabilitation efforts. The chosen consultant will also complete the nomination form for the Bainbridge Island Historic Register. If the City Council approves the nomination, the Suyematsu Farm would become the first publically owned property on the local register. The consultant will be paid for by a $20,000 grant the City received from the Washington State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation, through the efforts of the Historic Preservation Commission and Friends of the Farm.

The City of Bainbridge Island acquired the farm in 2001 from Japanese-American farmer Akio Suyematsu, who continued to farm the property under a life estate until his passing in 2012. It is the oldest continually operated farm in Kitsap County. Farming operations on the Suyematsu Farm are currently managed by the Bainbridge Island non-profit Friends of the Farm.

The project will commence with field work in January 2015, continue with architectural descriptions and assessments of the farm structures, and conclude with a feasibility study and local register nomination in August 2015. Visit the City’s website to learn more, and to download the request for qualifications. Qualifications must be submitted electronically to Heather Beckmann or mailed to: 280 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 by 4 pm, Friday, December 5, 2014.

Any questions or submissions regarding the request for qualifications can be addressed to Heather Beckmann, Associate Planner at (206) 780-3754.

Bainbridge Cinemas Air Live Met Opera Performances This Winter

Earlier this year, BILA announced its Community Partner Program (CPP), which seeks to create greater linkages between Bainbridge Island lodgers and top businesses and attractions. Through social media, website link exchanges and brochure swaps, lodgers and business owners are working together to promote Bainbridge Island as a fantastic overnight destination.

far-away-entertainment-logoOne of our first community partners was Far Away Entertainment, which operates Bainbridge Island’s two cinemas, the Historic Lynwood Theatre and the five-plex Bainbridge Cinemas. In addition to sharing their weekly showtimes with our member lodgers and guests, BILA is partnering with Far Away Entertainment to promote their 2014-2015 Met Opera performances. Between November 2014 and April 2015, Bainbridge Cinemas will air seven Metropolitan Opera performances live on screen!

met-operas-at-bainbridge-cinemas-285x285Thanks to the BILA-Far Away partnership, guests of BILA member lodgers will receive a $2 discount on Met Opera Live On Screen tickets. This partnership is particularly exciting since it takes place during the tourism off-season, when out-of-town guests to Bainbridge Island have fewer activities. So, this winter, thanks to Far Away Entertainment, enjoy phenomenal music from the comfort of a cinema seat (popcorn and candy optional)!

Join BPA for the world premiere production of “A Tale of Two Seas,” a brand new show by Victoria Whitlow Tuttle. A group of young fish venture into the unknown on a dare only to find an entirely new “seadom” that has been hidden from them all these years. Much like their own home, it is masked in sadness, and they must find a way to unite the two worlds and bring happiness back to the sea. Admission: $10 adults; $5 seniors, youth, military, students and teachers;

Birds of Chicago perform live at Treehouse Café

Birds of Chicago at Treehouse Café
8:00 pm @ Treehouse Café (4569 Lynwood Center Road NE)
Birds of Chicago is a collective built around JT Nero and Allison Russell, constant vagabonds touring in support of their debut, self-titled album. Their voices are undoubtedly the centerpiece, while the band pressure-cooks country, soul and blues in a way that forces some people to reach for extra hyphens in their description… they used to use the phrase “rock n roll” to describe this American mash up — Birds of Chicago still do. Admission: $15

Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra Performance
4:00 pm @ Bainbridge Performing Arts (200 Madison Avenue North)
Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra’s free community fall concert features two string ensembles: the Senior Orchestra, and the Sinfonietta. BIYO plays three concerts annually on Bainbridge Island, plus a side-by-side concert in the spring with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, and a local public and private school outreach tour throughout the year. Given that orchestra classes are not part of the Bainbridge Island public school curriculum, BIYO serves a vital role in the community, presenting young musicians with the opportunity to learn ensemble skills that are essential to becoming advanced musicians. Performers, ranging in ages from 7 to 18, are led by Musical Director Wesley Schulz. Admission: Free
