The focus of the workshop will be on close attention and scrupulous sensitivity, and an attempt to put it all down simply, and be willing to make changes, both as the light on your motif changes, and as you change your ideas about what’s important in the course of the painting.  The guiding principle is that we are working from the direct experience, and memory of it.  So even though we will meet online, we will be working with paying close attention to our actual surroundings, and drawing and painting them directly from life and from drawings and memory when necessary.  Photos can of course be used as an aid to memory but the emphasis will be on drawing, memory, particular experience, and developing your own painterly way of putting that down.  It’s important to find a way with your paint that allows you to try things, make adjustments, even radical changes,  and stay open and receptive to what is developing on the canvas….  We’ll talk about the role of drawing and working from drawings as a way of working with and deepening sense memory.

This class will explore ways of putting down what we see simply while also capturing a sense of the specific. The focus will be on painting with oils from direct observation and aiming to capture feeling and movement in what we see. We will cover such topics as color unity, suggesting versus delineating, subordinating and prioritizing elements, composing and revising, taking risks, and building interesting surfaces.
Each week will include discussion, examples and either live or recorded painting demos. Participants will paint on their own between class sessions and can share work for critique and ask questions in a private online group. We will work from direct observation of the still life, working quickly but deliberately. Some painting experience is helpful, but everyone is welcome. You need not have taken the first class to enroll.

Fragility 2020: An online exhibition of works on paper

Upcoming Dates: Sat, Sep 26 @ 1:00 pm

"Because of Covid-19, we are experiencing a new sense of acute fragility.  From a new understanding of our own physical vulnerabilities to watching once perceived stable economies stand still, we are forced to face the reality of a truly vulnerable society and state.  Our artists observe the limitations of an exhausted healthcare system, a postal system on the verge of collapse and a battle for truth through propaganda and capitalized media.

This exhibition is specifically focused on the fragile medium of works on paper.  Artists often use paper as a way to work through ideas and create drafts that are considered temporary. The ephemeral nature of the medium lends itself to consider the current world of uncertainty and fragility we find ourselves in.

Artists showcased in this online exhibition have all pledged to donate 20% of all sales from this show to healthcare workers on the front lines.

We are all in this together."

What is a Sew-In??

If you sew and have a sewing machine, bring your machine (some extra machines are available at the sew-in) and notions (thread, scissors, pins, etc.) to join others making quilt squares or sewing rows together.

If you do not sew, come to cut fabric or iron or whatever is needed to assist the process.

All fabric is provided.  Come for an hour or the afternoon. There is always plenty to do.

American Hero Quilt

American Hero Quilters was established in 2004 to provide recognition and appreciation to wounded service men and women who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  Each quilt is a metaphoric hug and a way to express gratitude for their service to our country.

American Hero Quilts has over 800 volunteers participating in the program–ranging from piecers, binders, quilters and other helpers, including generous contributors.  As of the first of the year in 2018, AH has provided over 26,500 quilts to our military men and women and their families.  Quilts are sent to Madigan Hospital at Joint Base Lewis McCord and other Warrior Transition Centers in the US then directly to bases in Afghanistan.

Project Sponsor

This Sew-In is an annual event sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild (BIMQG) a local non-profit formed to develop and encourage the art of modern quilting, encourage new quilters and other fiber artists interested in non-traditional quilting projects, offer educational opportunities through classes, workshops and sharing of information, and provide opportunities for “charity” or other works that give back to the community through the use of modern quilting skills. BIMQG also organizes the Bainbridge Quilt Festival the second Saturday of September.
