Things To Do on Bainbridge Island This Week – November 11-17

We begin this week with an appropriate event observing Veterans’ Day- a lecture about the Korean War with Larry Kerr. The Korean War LectureLecture: Korea, The Forgotten War

A fitting event to commemorate Veterans’ Day, it’s the second lecture in a three-part series presented by Laurence Kerr. In this lecture, he will discuss the Incheon landing, General Douglass MacArthur’s political and military decisions, China’s entry into the war, and the Chosin Breakout. Admission: Free

Richard Jesse Watson at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art

Exhibition: Richard Jesse Watson’s ‘Inner Zoo, Outer Orbit’

Richard Jesse Watson has been creating children’s picture books since 1985. His version of The Night Before Christmas rocketed to the New York Times Bestseller List (HarperCollins 2006), and Tom Thumb won the SCBWI Golden Kite Award. His illustrations have been chosen for numerous juried exhibitions, including The Original Art Exhibit, the Society of Illustration Annual Exhibit; permanent and traveling exhibits with MAZZA Museum, and the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature. Kirkus Review proclaims his book, The Magic Rabbit, “exuberant”. Publishers Weekly asserts, “Watson’s artwork achieves a startling blend of the ancient and the timeless.” Admission: Free

Join Andrew MacMillan, Chairman of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, and IslandWood naturalists for an informal evening workshop.The Pacific Northwest is a drizzly place – and that means our local fall mushrooms are in season now but won’t last forever. The fungi in our forests come in a variety of colors, shapes, textures and yes, even odors. Learn about the lives of mushrooms in your backyard and be prepared to ‘get your geek on’ with other mycology enthusiasts. A great introductory workshop for those new to mushrooming, bring your fungi folklore and questions. Admission: $5 per person

Learn how to help your family prepare for the busy and often stressful holiday season! Join speech-language pathologist Mary Jensen and Kathy Hartmann, a developmental preschool teacher, for an interactive lecture for parents and educators presented by KiDiMu. Presenters will share tips on how to foster fruitful family communication and they will discuss the following topics: The virtues of simplicity; ways to avoid stress for the adults so that the whole family will enjoy the holidays; what to expect from young children when schedules are disrupted; maintaining reasonable expectations for behavior; using visual materials to help kids stay centered and more. Space is limited. Advance registration encouraged. Admission: $5 advance; $7 at the door
